An idiom is what we call a Redewendung in German - it has a figurative meaning.
This meaning is not identical with the literal meaning of the words used.
All languages use idioms - in English there a about 25.000 idiomatic expressions.
I'm pretty sure you have an idiom or two you regularly use in your mother tongue. Idioms make your language more colorful.
Spice up your English by adding some idioms to your vocabulary - but don't overegg the pudding ;-)
If you use too many of them, you sound rather strange.
