Paul is a typical parrot - he loves words... And as he is a very special parrot, he has a good command of the English grammar as well.
Here he collects important and interesting little bits and pieces of language for you. So come here often to check out what he has in store for you. |
have a good command of sth - etwas gut be-herrschen
bits and pieces - kleine Stückchen have in store - im Angebot haben |
So do I ::: Neither do I ::: I do
In English there are different ways to agree to something - or to disagree with it. What you say depends on what the other has said before:
if their statement was "positive" or "negative".
Im Englischen gibt es verschiedene Wege jemandem zuzustimmen - oder nicht zuzustimmen. Was man sagt hängt davon ab, ob der andere eine "positive" oder eine "negative" Aussage gemacht hat.

::: Let's call it a day :::
Here is a nice little expression for you!
It means: I (or we) have worked enough and want to say it's time to stop and finish working now.
You can use it either way:

A classic question : from or of ?

::: Talk about your JOB :::
What does the tree say???
He talks about his job. And wants to know what your job is.
Maybe you say: I'm in banking. Or: I'm a baker. Or: I'm self-employed.
Watch out ! German learners of English often say 'I'm working for this company.' A speaker of English understands that this is only a temporary (vorübergehend) thing and NOT your regular job.

::: Prepositions with Paul :::
Funny! When I was a young parrot, I really thought in Germany people sit ON tables and desks - I liked the idea and was very disappointed to find out they only sit AT their desk or table.
Well, I guess for humans it's more comfortable to sit ON a chair AT a desk. They are sooo unathletic.
Aleesha tells me almost every day that someone in a course said, he sat ON his desk.
You will not say this anymore, will you?
Or only if you REALLY sit ON your desk! Please send me a photo !!!!

' Wie sagt man das auf Englisch?'
That's a question learners ask quite often, don't they? So, what's right:
How do you call this in English? What do you call this in English? |
A clumsy parrot ...
::: look :: watch :: see :::
Ok - an attentive parrot is of course always on the look-out for WORDS ...
So, let's look at some words which all have to do with 'SEHEN'.

Adverbs & adjectives
The good news is: if you make mistakes with using adverbs or adjectives communication will definitely NOT break down :-)
BUT we are here for learning, aren't we? So let's have a look if we can improve this little piece of language.
