What is Socializing English?
It's all the language we need to talk with people - from saying hello to saying goodbye, from chatting about the latest rumors to making comments on the weather.
I guess we can say that 'Socializing English' is one of the most important things to learn or improve - as it is this kind of communication that gets and keeps us in touch with others.
So, let's 'get social' ...

So, let's 'get social' ...
Saying hello
This is how almost every communication begins - greeting the other person. The way to say hello depends on the situation (formal/informal).
Greetings for (almost) every situation
|
Hi and hello are not as formal as Good morning/ afternoon/ evening. Don't say Good night - this is not a greeting It means 'I'll leave now', or 'I'll got to bed now'. 'Hey, ...' and 'How's it goin(g)' are very relaxed ways of saying hello. |
Greetings before a conversation
|
All these sentences are nice ways to say a bit more than just 'hello'.
Make sure you know one or two of them - they are the bridge between the greeting and the conversation. Also learn one or two appropriate answers to such questions. Soon coming up here! :-) |
Greetings at a party or social event
|
Very often we small talk - in your own language you will not even realize, HOW often..
When it comes to small talking in another language, things often get critical. Start learning some 'standard things' to say. And think about things you could talk about before the event (hobbies, weather, the location etc.) and: DON'T be shy! Just DO it! TALK! |
Greeting in a friend's home
|
These phrases are of course not only good for being at a friend's place.
They also work when invited to a colleague's home. So - pick one or two and memorize them. |
Cultural differences - very important information
German people find it strange when English people (or others) compliment them on their clothes, hair, home etc.
BUT this is a way of being polite - and not bootlicking.
So be not surprised or shocked or amused when somebody tells you how great your tie looks on you - just smile and say "Well, thank you!". And try to give a compliment yourself from time to time - especially with Americans :-)
This is NOT superficial nonsense - it's part of English culture. And doesn't it make life much nicer to say or hear something positive every now and then?
